Annandale Cottage Rear Extension
A single-storey cottage in Annandale, in Sydney’s Inner West, with a new kitchen, dining and living wing across the back that opens straight onto the garden.
From the street the house is a white-painted cottage with a red terracotta tile roof, a gabled front, a verandah and a picket fence on a low brick wall [Greg: is it Federation, and roughly when was it built?]. Beside it, a pair of tall gates opens onto a strip driveway. [Greg: what did the owners ask for, and what was at the back before?] [Greg: is the house in a heritage conservation area, and did the extension go through a Development Application (DA) or a Complying Development Certificate (CDC)?]
The new wing sits under a low, flat roof with deep eaves that shelter a stone-paved terrace on two sides. At the corners, bifold doors and windows fold right back, so the living area opens to the lawn and the kitchen bench opens to the terrace like a servery. Inside, the ceiling rises to a raked peak, with a glazed gable at one end letting in light from above. [Greg: which of these parts did you design, and which were already there or done by others?]
The kitchen, dining and living area now work as one long, light room, with timber floors, white joinery and a fireplace at the garden end, and garden views on more than one side. [Greg: how do the owners use it now, and is there a line from them we can quote?]
